Secondary Transition:
The Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, and the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) are pleased to announce the "Pennsylvania Secondary Transition Guide" www.secondarytransition.org. A website designed to be a central information hub for youth and families navigating the transition from secondary education to adult life.

The website is organized by secondary transition topics that cover key areas, including post-secondary education and training, employment and community living. Information on the website is designed to highlight important subjects and activities based on a student's age. The website links to other Pennsylvania agencies and departments that support secondary transition. Materials for youth and families are added to the web portal frequently, so be sure to add the website to your favorites and return to the site often!

English as a Second Language (esl)

The English as a Second Language Program serves children who come from all over the world and helps to build the bridge that connects students' new language acquisition skills in English to what they bring culturally and linguistically from their homeland. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program includes assessment, instruction, and consultation.  The student populations include: refugees and immigrants who are relocating permanently to the United States; children whose parents have come to the area on business or are participating in university or hospital exchange programs; children of a family member learning or teaching a skill or trade; students who were born in United States but come from a home where little English is spoken; and internationally adopted students.

When the school district refers a student for ESL, the student is first evaluated to determine English language proficiency. The program then recommends the number of hours of instruction that would be most appropriate for the student based on state guidelines. At the end of each nine week period, parents of K-12 ESL students receive a report card regarding their child's academic progress. Each child in the program takes a statewide assessment to chart Annual Yearly Progress for No Child Left Behind regulations to determine their growth and proficiency for the next academic year.
